WHAT IS IT?

Granite is a naturally occurring igneous rock composed mainly of quartz, mica and feldspar. The way in which these three minerals combine during the formation of the rock determines the unique colour, pattern and texture of the granite.

Mined throughout the world, granite worktops consist of sheets of polished stone that are joined together to form the countertop. A hole will typically be cut into the granite slab to fit a sink – which can be either under-mounted or inset.

COLOURS AND FINISHES

Granite can be split into two types: veined and pebbled. Veined granite worktops are generally considered to give a design more ‘movement’, with streaks of colour running through the stone; whereas pebbled or mottled granite countertops give a calming, tranquil feel.

As they are made from a natural material, no two granite worktops will ever be the same. A huge variety of colours are available, from pinks and blues to reds, greys and blacks, including:

When choosing granite worktops, you will also need to consider the edge detail; this could be a standard bevel, chamfer or rounded edge, or a more complicated profile.HOW TO CARE FOR IT

One of the main advantages of granite worktops is that they are virtually indestructible. There are, however, a few steps you can take to keep your worktops looking pristine for longer.

Avoid abrasive cleaning cloths and strong cleaning solutions like bleach
Wipe up any spills immediately
Avoid placing hot pans directly onto the granite worktop
Consider having the surface of your granite worktop sealed to preserve the finish for longer
Granite is an extremely heavy material so it is also important to make sure all worktops are properly reinforced.

DESIGN SUGGESTIONS

Choosing a black finish for your worktop gives your kitchen or workspace a sleek, polished look

A lighter white finish, with tones of grey and gold, can be a great choice to warm up a contemporary space
Often, designers suggest a darker finished worktop contrasted with bright coloured walls to really make a design unique
A granite island can be a great, practical addition to any kitchen!
